Funny how I’m posting more when I have more to do. Er. Procrastination? NEVER!

Dreams are something you can never really let go of, but as I listen to all sort of artists– among them Japanese super-artists all below the age of 20– I do realize that I’ll more likely than not never be a musician. Especially in the US, talent grows less impressive with age; I was a decent singer 4 years ago and I’m a better singer now, but it was more impressive then even though my ability has grown since. Youth is a commodity, and the window closes as years go on. Also, the intricacy of music and true talent are small beans compared to brute vocal force and money in the musical machine in this country; the most recent few winners of American Idol (Jordin Sparks, here’s lookin’ at you) have some singing ability in the mainstream tradition and that’s it. Loud, occasionally melismatic, chest-voice-y, overbearing, where high notes and sheer volume take precedence over the melding of a song’s layers as a whole.

Bleh. How graceless.
